Sweet and harmless? I know. But still… I find myself disconcerted in my sentiments.

You see, I've enjoyed being the mother of this boy so far. He daunts me with his independent nature. So sure of himself, so confident. And rough and tough, of course. He'll fly across the football field in a racing zeal and recover from a hockey-circling tussle without skipping a beat. He's clever negotiating gifts for good grades and sweet as can be leaving little love notes that say I'm sorry when he hasn't been so good. For so long, I've been the only woman in his life. But today I realize, one day, I will no longer be.

He will grow up to have many crushes, girlfriends, and eventually a wife. And of course no one will ever replace me. After all, I am one-of-a-kind, his mom. But still in my heart lingers a twinge of uncertainty. One day I will no longer be the only woman.

And, let me tell you, I am not one to play the role of the jealous mother. I won't be the mother muttering under her breath she will never be good enough for my son. I won't be the mother competing, never leaving her grown son in peace. That form of a mother will never define who I am because I know that next to any woman in my son's life, I am incomparable.

Still, what mother does not find a moment of unease knowing that one day her son will grow to be married and will share a life with another woman?  When a special bond exists between a mother and a son, a unique connection is cultivated. She is a nurturer, a caretaker, a best friend-she fleshes the first role of a woman in his world.

Knowing that I can't cease nature in its course, I've comprehended that this notion of another woman is one I have to accept. So, I will do what many other wise mothers in the past have managed to achieve.

I will craft a beautiful image of a woman. I will give my son, everyday, the best of me. In my actions, in the reflection of my behavior, I will teach my son the kindness a woman can exude, the motivation she can bestow, the strength she can command, the love she can endow. I will show him a portrayal of a woman that pushes him to be the best of himself, that shows him respect, and reveals a world with sunshine in his gaze. Then, when the time arises, he will surely seek out this type of internal beauty in his search.

And my hope is that he will find a woman that will love him as much as me.
