Kundalini Yoga to Detox and Destress with Maya Fiennes Acacia Lifestyle, 2007. Available online at Amazon.com.
One of the most important parts about igniting an at-home yoga practice is finding the right teacher. In Kundalini Yoga to Detox and Destress, yogi Maya Fiennes proves, through sheer charisma, that she is one such instructor. From varied levels of breathing instruction to guiding viewers through active - and very challenging - yoga poses, Fiennes encourages and prompts her students to continue, that moving forward with the practice will be truly worth it.
And it is worth it. Kundalini yoga - which is built upon the premise of active meditation - is a challenging form of yoga, going well beyond basic breathing and stretching techniques to sometimes cross the line into Pilates and even aerobics. The hard-won result is a stronger immune system, a detoxified body, and boosted adrenal and kidney function.
Kundalini Yoga to Detox and Destress promises to relieve stress, and help increase everyday awareness. And I'll tell you what: I felt it even after just one workout. It was challenging - so much so that I would have expected to feel fatigue. But instead, I was invigorated, and felt (if you can believe it after just one run-through), healthier. Truly, it was amazing.
Maya Fiennes is an incredible instructor. She makes you want to continue, even when you might otherwise stop halfway into the routine (it's a full 60 minute workout). Throughout Kundalini Yoga to Detox and Destress, the poses, breathing techniques, and meditations are set to Fiennes's own music; she is a musician as well as a yoga teacher. The downside, if there is one, is that the kundalini practice is so intense that I'm not sure it's doable (at least for me) as an everyday routine. However, kundalini yoga practitioners will love this DVD, as will those looking for an introduction to the challenging and unique practice. Try it; your body will thank you for it.
About the Author
Carly Hope Finseth spends much of her time pondering what she wants to be when she grows up. She alternates between days filled with cozy socks, hot tea, and meditative reflection - and others, which are loaded with caffeine fixes, grueling commutes, and one fire to put out after another. When she’s not sifting through e-mails, dropping her cell phone, or sticking another reminder Post-It on her desk, Carly also somehow finds the time to write and reflect on important (and the occasional not-so-important) feminist issues.
