One word: "Wow!" Tracy Anderson's Dance Aerobics workout DVD has been hailed as "the most complete dance workout DVD ever" - and they're not kidding. Including two hours of in-depth instructional techniques and 45 minutes of solid workout dance time, this truly is the dance DVD that will give any dancer - beginner or not - a run for his or her money.

Don't plan on doing this DVD from start to finish unless you're either (or perhaps both): a.) a dancer; or b.) very much in shape. This workout DVD is designed to get your booty shaking and into tip-top shape in no time - and, you'll have a ton of fun doing it. But if you're new to dance or are just starting to add cardio to your workout regimen, well, then don't plan to get this all down overnight.

One of the best parts about Tracy Anderson's Dance Aerobics DVD (aside from the fact that it's just plain fun) is that it's customizable. There are three different modes: Instructional, Workout, and Learning Mode. The workout is split up into mini-dances, or songs, that you learn individually. Play any of the instructionals, and Anderson will walk you through the moves, in 8-step style, that you need to learn - first slowly, then building up to full tempo. She doesn't coddle, though; be prepared to learn the styles, moves, and terminology of dance in lightning speed. Of course, this is actually quite nice for intermediate and advanced dancers; and the rest of us can always hit the rewind button and try again. In fact, I often would play the Instructionals several times in order to make sure that I "got it."

"Workouts" mode is just that - a crash course in high intensity dance and aerobics, incorporating everything Anderson taught in the Instructionals. Learning Mode, though, is perhaps the best way to enjoy this DVD - at least the first few times you watch it. It takes an Instructional lesson, then follows it up immediately with that portion of the Workout. Topping off the DVD is an interview with Anderson (a celebrity trainer who has worked with the likes of Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow) discussing how to achieve optimum fitness through dance.

Ultimately, I found Tracy Anderson's Dance Aerobics to be much more than the standard workout DVD; instead, you feel as if you're literally in the studio with Anderson as she teaches you how to get in shape - and enjoy - dance. Her style - which has been honed from more than 10 years of research on how to help women tone and maintain their bodies - is tough and no-nonsense with little room for beginning explanations. But if you are a fast learner or have experience in dance and/or aerobics, then this is a gem. Image

About the Author

Carly Hope Finseth spends much of her time pondering what she wants to be when she grows up. She alternates between days filled with cozy socks, hot tea, and meditative reflection - and others, which are loaded with caffeine fixes, grueling commutes, and one fire to put out after another. When she’s not sifting through e-mails, dropping her cell phone, or sticking another reminder Post-It on her desk, Carly also somehow finds the time to write and reflect on important (and the occasional not-so-important) feminist issues.
